Travel Diaries - What I Got Up To In Llandow and Barry Island

At Christmas, my parents gifted me a voucher for a lorry driving experience for one and just three weeks ago we went on a journey to Llandow and Barry Island for an all-day family day trip.

We set off at about 7:30 in the morning and headed for my nan and gramps house which we arrived at just after 8 o clock. After we all had our final pees we set off in the car with destination Llandow in sight. The directions were fairly straightforward, estimated time of arrival was 9:30am and we needed to be there just before 10:00am so it was looking as if we had plenty of time to spare, have a coffee and a break before the lorry driving commenced. However, as we got to what we thought was the destination for Llandow Circuit we got told we were 'sort of' at the right place, we had to take a left and another few lefts again to reach a yellow barrier which we needed to go through it and the destination would be there. So they said..! It was nearing towards 10:00am now with around five minutes to spare we were still driving around and all eyes were trying to find this yellow barrier, we made it and there was a conned circuit but no lorry or signs to be seen so we began to head back to the original site when the lorry drove straight past us. We spun back around and we were back at the conned circuit again at 9:58am. We made it!

The man that was taking the experience was lovely and very welcoming. I had a quick introduction talk and a check to complete any sign-in sheets and that was it, off I went climbing aboard this Renault Magnum with a 55ft trailer attached to it.

The whole driving experience lasted around 20 minutes and it including basic accelerating, driving around cones, making U-turns and I even attempted reversing in a straight line but that went horrifically wrong as I ended up going diagonally! Overall it was such a fun experience and something that I've always wanted to do so it's one to tick off the bucket list.

Next stop was Barry Island, so we got back on the road, headed for the beach, parked up and started walking down to the beach. We had the perfect weather for our day trip as there were blue skies the sun was beaming and there was about one cloud in the sky if that! Alongside the beach front, we spotted the cafe that is featured in the television programme Gavin and Stacey where Stacey worked in the show so we got some beverages and cakes and sat there for a while before we decided our next move.

We then decided to take the sidewalk to get some better views of Barry and the surrounding islands. The walk itself is quite short and isn't steep which was reliving as it was so hot,  but the views are beautiful. Honestly watching the sea is incredibly relaxing and from working up an appetite we ate lunch at Whitmore and Jackson which offered a lovely selection of paninis, I went for cheese and red onion which was scrumptious.

That was everything that we did when we took a day trip to Llandow and Barry Island. I definitely recommend heading to the beach area, not in school time or a weekend, as it is beautiful and you can easily waste away hours just people watching! Have you ever been before? If so what did you get up to? Thanks for reading, you can find me here:
